Kou-gosai

Kou-gosai is the name given to the detailed polychrome technique developed by Tadao Miyamoto, the first generation of Shinseigama, after years of dedicated exploration. It is a unique expression that can only be achieved at Shinseigama.

Kou-gosai is created through the intricate synergy of three key elements: extraordinarily precise brushwork that breathes life into the designs, the distinctive Gosu (cobalt oxide) color, and the exceptionally high transparency of the pigments. These elements combine to form the unparalleled artistry of Kou-gosai.

Since ancient times, it has been said that “Kutani cannot exist without overglaze painting.”

A single, living line forms a pattern, and the collective patterns create a painting.

To create vibrant and lively paintings, precise line drawing, strong artistic skills, and a well-developed sense of composition are essential. Mastering the art of ultra-fine detail work requires more than just painting small, uniform patterns. It demands an almost unfathomable amount of practice to express the subtle nuances and charm through delicate variations and textures.

For line drawing, we use a distinctive Gosu (cobalt oxide) with a brownish tint. Unlike the more commonly used black Gosu, this unique pigment creates a rich and dignified expression when applied and fired, adding depth and character to the artwork.

The pigments used at Shinseigama are renowned for their overwhelming beauty and high transparency. When layered, they create expressions that shimmer like gemstones. The pigments, applied over patterns drawn with Gosu, are fired at approximately 900 degrees Celsius—the highest firing temperature used in Kutani ware—resulting in stunningly vibrant colors.

By meticulously applying different colors within a single pattern, the surface of the piece appears to rise three-dimensionally. Additionally, different pigment formulations are used for broader areas of the design compared to the finer details, ensuring each section is brought to life with the appropriate depth and texture.

In this process, the pigments are applied and fired repeatedly, often over a dozen times. While multiple firings typically carry a high risk of peeling, Shinseigama has developed a unique pigment formulation and meticulous application techniques that make this possible. These carefully crafted methods allow the pigments to adhere securely, even after many firings.

All of this is done to create rich and expressive surfaces.

Kou-gosai is the result of the relentless pursuit of every element required to create the ultimate masterpiece. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, continuing to evolve under the stewardship of Masao Miyamoto, the second generation of Shinseigama.
